National City donut shop worker pistol-whipped during robbery

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. -- An employee at a National City donut shop was pistol-whipped during a robbery early Thursday morning.

National City police said the attack and robbery occurred shortly after midnight at the Winchell’s Donut House at 2447 E. Plaza Blvd., near Euclid Avenue.

A witness told 10News he was about to enter the shop when he saw a man hitting a worker behind the counter. The witness said he ran back to his car as the suspected attacker ran out of the front door and fled in a red van.

Responding officers determined the suspected attacker was pistol-whipped the employee while trying to take the cash register.

The worker was taken to the hospital with a head injury, but the severity is not known.

Police did not say if the attacker was able to get away with any cash.
