SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) - A homeowner opened fire at a person suspected of breaking into a backyard shed at his San Ysidro home early Friday morning.

At around 4:15 a.m., the homeowner went to check on a noise coming from his backyard in the 3500 block of Janse Way and spotted a pile of his tools next to a shed. A man he didn’t know emerged from the shed with something in his hand, and fearing for his safety, the resident fired at least two shots towards the stranger.

The would-be burglar ran away, and San Diego police said it did not appear he was struck by the gunfire.

Officers found a shopping cart around the corner from the house that may have belonged to the suspected burglar. Police said a neighbor spotted someone running away from the cart.

The homeowner’s wife and four children were inside the house at the time of the confrontation, but they were not injured.

A description of the would-be burglar was not immediately released.
