SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A 4-year-old boy suffered serious injuries after being struck by a pickup truck as he walked along an Interstate 15 offramp in the City Heights area Tuesday morning.

The incident was reported just after 12 a.m. on the University Avenue offramp from southbound I-15, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officials told 10News they are still trying to determine why the boy was walking alone along the freeway when he was hit by a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado.

The truck’s 29-year-old driver remained at the scene and contacted authorities of the collision. The driver told CHP officials that he was coming up the offramp when he saw the boy. He tried to stop, but was unable to do so in time, according to the CHP.

Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash, the CHP said.

The boy was transported to Rady Children’s Hospital with major injuries. His condition is unknown as of Tuesday afternoon.
