NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- Two people escaped serious injury after the semi-truck they were in lost control on a South Bay freeway transition ramp, struck a guardrail and went down an embankment.

The incident occurred at around 4:20 a.m. on the northbound Interstate 805 on-ramp to eastbound state Route 54, according to the California Highway Patrol.

While the cause of the crash is under investigation, two people inside the big rig were able to kick out the windshield to escape the wreckage.

Both were evaluated by emergency crews and were expected to be OK.

The big rig and its trailer remained just off the ramp and at rest against a tree as crews worked to remove it.

One lane on the transition ramp was closed due to the incident.
