SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Kathy’s Legacy Foundation announced its official partnership with San Diego Humane Society in an effort to help people and their pets in domestic violence situations.

Kathy’s Legacy gave a $20,000 grant to SDHS in support of its new domestic violence program. The humane society plans to partner with local shelters to either help make space for victims and their pets or house their pets at the humane society for the victims.

Dr. Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of San Diego Humane Society, tells 10News "no matter how we do it we want to make sure no victim of domestic violence ever has to be concerned about their pet".

Unfortunately, Kathy Scharbarth was a victim of domestic violence and was murdered in 2011. Her mother Ginny Scharbarth says she didn't leave because she was worried about her dog, Lady.

Kathy’s Legacy Co-founder and Executive Director, Ginny Scharbarth, tells 10News "we don’t want domestic violence victims to stay, we want them to seek safety and know where their pets are safe as well and where they wont be totally separate from them."
