IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - The Mayor of Imperial Beach ripped down a chain link gate Thursday even though the man who installed the fence threatened to sue the city. Mayor Serge Dedina said a resident installed a fence illegally 12 years ago and the Mayor wanted it removed.

“The guy threatened to take us to court and get a lawyer. We’re not concerned about it. In fact, welcome to do it,” said Dedina.

The chain link gate was at the end of a public alley. Mayor Dedina said it blocked the alley and blocked access to San Diego Bay. The Mayor said they contacted the man who installed the gate, Bill Webb, and warned him about the removal. Dedina said the man threatened to sue the city.

“He doesn’t have a case to stand on. It violates the coastal act. It takes up our public property. So, if he wants to fight, that’s great.  I can’t wait.”

10News was invited to watch the removal. Dedina said he wants property owners to take more responsibility with their properties. Mr. Webb briefly watched the Mayor and two city workers remove the gate but declined to speak with 10News.
