PINE VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - Two teenagers were caught Wednesday at a Border Patrol checkpoint in East San Diego County with undocumented immigrants and a loaded gun in their car, said the U.S. Border Patrol.

The 19-year-old driver and an 18-year-old male passenger reached the primary inspection area at the checkpoint on Interstate 8 in Pine Valley at 2 a.m., said the Border Patrol.

Agents said they noticed two men lying down in the cargo area of the Hyundai Santa Fe SUV and found three more men in the back seat.

After further questioning, the men admitted they were Mexican nationals in the country illegally, said the Border Patrol.

Agents said they found an AR-15 assault rifle loaded with 19 rounds of ammunition in the SUV's rear cargo area.

The Border Patrol said the teenagers were taken into custody on suspicion of human smuggling.
