How to break a car window to free a dog from a hot car

(KGTV)--In an emergency situation, knowing how to destroy a car window can be a lifesaver. If your child or a pet are stuck inside a sweltering hot SUV you might think it would be easy to just break the glass with a rock, right?

Wrong.

The tempered glass used on the side windows of vehicles is hard and difficult to shatter.

Here are some tips for a successful smash:

Tip 1: Use a special tool. Some forethought can be useful. Why not consider purchasing a special tool, like the Automatic Center Punch by Rennsteig Tools, and keeping it on you in the event of an emergency? You'll have your baby or Chihuahua recovering in just about a second with this one but there are other tools listed on Amazon that can also help in the event of an emergency.

Tip 2: Use a spark plug. National Geographic TV tried to shatter a window with a rubber mallet and failed. It then demonstrated how to successfully break the side window by hitting a spark plug with a hammer to reveal a sharp, fine-pointed porcelain edge that can be thrown at the window. Check it out.

Tip 3: Use your car’s headrest. Lifehack demonstrates the use of a car’s headrest to break a car’s side window from the inside out but this method could also be helpful if you're on the outside with access to another vehicle's headrest. You'll have to remove the headrest to unveil the metal pegs and then use one of the pegs to push against the edge of a window until it shatters. It works!

Happy crushing!
