Former Presidential Candidate Senator Bernie Sanders has paid his debts to National City. The city’s mayor said the Senator was more than 16-months late covering more than $28,000 worth of services National City covered.
National City Mayor Ron Morrison said a collection agency threatened to sue the Sanders Campaign in August after several late notices were ignored. Morrison said National City was forced to pay police and public works employees overtime to assist with a campaign rally in Kimball Park in May of 2016. However, the city is not allowed to use taxpayer money to support a candidate for political office. It’s against the law.
Morrison said the ordeal will make the city think twice before scheduling a last-minute event without getting paid in advance.
“This makes it difficult now because you get burned on something like this,” he said.
