Empowering young women through science

Unique camp exposes girls to science

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A science fair this Saturday will feature the findings from 25 very unique scientists. The scientists are all girls between the ages of 9 and 15 and they’ve never done anything like this before.

The US National Park Service, in conjunction with the San Diego Public Library, hosted its first Egologik Camp. The two-and-a-half-week camp was designed specifically for young women from underserved areas of San Diego County who would otherwise not get the opportunity to conduct scientific experiments.

“It’s very inspiring. Each of these girls, you can tell, day one to now have completely grown as women and as scientists,” said Nicole Ornelas, one of the camp instructors.

The young scientists will present their projects in front of professional women scientists at a fair this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Cabrillo National Monument.
