SAN DIEGO – A drunk man stumbling around a freeway stopped traffic on Interstate 5 in the Balboa Park area of San Diego late Sunday night.

According to California Highway Patrol, at around 11:15 p.m., emergency dispatchers received several 911 calls about a man stumbling in and out of the northbound lanes of I-5 looking at a cell phone, maybe playing a game such as Pokemon Go.

The man stumbled along the shoulder, tripping and falling on the asphalt, forcing cars to slam on their brakes to avoid hitting him. He appeared unaware of his surroundings.

At one point, a nurse driving home from work pulled over in front of the man and tried to stop him, but he walked around her car.

Eventually, responding CHP officers shut down the freeway and officers took the man into custody. As he was loaded into an ambulance, he told paramedics he needed to find his lost phone.

His name and the charges he faces were not immediately confirmed.
