Dead Crabs Washes Onto Coronado Beaches

Posted

CORONADO, C.A. — Dozens of dead crabs have been popping up on the beaches, and it’s concerning some residents.

“It’s startling because there's just so many of them,” said Coronado resident, Natalia Leonard.

She said she’s lived on the island for nearly 40 years and she often walks along the beach.

“I don't mind seeing one or two crabs, but this time there were dozens,” she said.

She said some of the dead crabs are intact, while others have their body parts scattered everywhere. She said she found most of them in front of the Hotel Del Coronado.

“If it's something like the sewage then we need to get that cleared up, if it is something like global warming, we need to get that cleared up,” said Leonard.

10News sent some images of the dead crabs to the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, and they said they’ve seen large masses of crab wash up in the last two years, but they don’t know why.

“If we know why and there's something you can do about it, we need to do something about it.” said Leonard.
