Dangerous fires set close to Hillcrest homes

Posted

Some people in Hillcrest say they’re terrified that a crime trend is back in their neighborhood.
Back in February, flames ripped through a house after someone set a dumpster on fire outside. An elderly couple and their family dog almost died.

"I'm not sure why somebody's doing it but you almost killed my parents,” Gustaf Rooth Jr. told 10News at the time. “Whoever's doing this is devastating our neighborhood! Knock it off.”

Friday morning, neighbors near Third Avenue and Brookes Avenue woke up to find another trash bin on fire- right outside that same house.

Some Hillcrest residents said it was the third time it has happened in that alley this year. Some of them blame the homeless.

“It’s a little terrifying to know that someone is doing this and really just targeting random people it seems,” said Amber Douglas, who lives right around the corner. “I think it’s really important that people acknowledge that there is a lot of danger when playing with fire, it’s not just funny it’s not just a joke, it’s not just random buildings either there are people and belongings and pets inside.”

The last fire, arson investigators thought was suspicious. 10News is working to find out if fire crews think these are related.
