Copper thief could cost business thousands

Posted

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) – An Escondido business owner could end up paying thousands of dollars to repair a $6 theft.

Don Prestage of Escondido Plating says someone stole 30-feet of above ground copper piping that provides water to his business.

“The whole thing was about a $6 worth of copper, but it cost me about $900 to replace it,” Prestage said.

While the pipes were getting replaced, the city found out the placement of businesses' water valve wasn’t up to code, and they wanted it moved closer to the street.

Prestage says that would cost him about $2,000 - but he's trying to work out those details with the city.

“If they guy came to me and said I need $6, that would have been much easier,” Prestage said.
