The San Diego city council voted 8-1 to move forward with a plan to turn a South Bay Super 8 motel into a new rehab facility for misdemeanor drug offenders.

Back in the summer the council gave the ok to buy the property but Monday approved a conditional use permit and $6.5 million in funding for the SMART program.

Those in favor, including the Mayor and police chief, say the facility is an easy to convert option, that will actually make the area safer.

But those against have concerns about the people that could be staying there and say it could impact tourism and revitalization efforts.
