EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - A young boy is in police custody after he was spotted wandering alone in an El Cajon neighborhood early Thursday morning.

A woman told 10News she saw the boy -- believed to be 3 or 4 years old -- crying while he walked in the 700 block of South Orange Avenue at about 5 a.m.

After calling 911, the woman asked the boy why he was out on the street alone.

"I asked him where he lives and he pointed towards where we live and he didn't know which apartments. I said, 'Where is your mom?' and he said, 'She left me here so I don't know,'" said the woman, who told 10News she lives in the area but doesn't recognize the child.

El Cajon police were called to the scene and spoke to the boy before taking him away in a squad car to the Polinsky Childrens Center in Kearny Mesa.
