(KGTV)--A three-year-old chihuahua named Maxwell is recovering after being found slurping up spilled vodka inside his allegedly drunk owner's vehicle last Thursday afternoon.

WTAE first reported the canine's medical emergency after Bethel Park Police encountered 44-year-old Thomas Bloedel, who appeared to be intoxicated when officers found him "resting against a fence," Police Chief Timothy O'Connor said.

"He was stumbling around like a person who was drunk," Dimitri Brown of University Veterinary Specialists said of Maxwell the dog. "His pupils were dilated."

Police said after being treated overnight, Maxwell was doing well by Friday but his owner, Bloedel, surely is not. He was taken to Allegheny County Jail and charged with misdemeanor counts of DUI, terroristic threats and an animal cruelty offense.
