CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A driver was arrested early Friday morning after police say he crashed his car into a fire hydrant at a Chula Vista mall parking lot, causing water to be sent nearly 50 feet into the air.
At around 4:30 a.m., Chula Vista police responded to reports of a geyser spewing water into the air near the AMC Theatres at Otay Ranch Town Center off Eastlake Parkway.
When officers arrived, they spotted a white BMW sedan with front-end and tire damage just beyond a sheared fire hydrant. Officers saw the driver near the vehicle and attempted to make contact with him, but the man fled the scene.
The driver was eventually apprehended several yards away and taken into custody. There is no word on what charges he may face.
Two other passengers from the car who ran away have not been located.
City crews shut off the water at around 5:15 a.m., but the geyser created a wet mess in the parking lot.
