A car was cut in half Monday night after flying off an embankment in University City in what may have involved a pursuit and a hit-and-run with a second vehicle.
The 25-year-old driver lost control of his speeding 2001 Honda Civic on Genesee Avenue near Centurion Square and crashed shortly after 10 p.m. Monday, according to San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros.
"The Honda was split in half and came to rest in the ditch on the side of the road," the officer said.
The driver suffered a fractured femur, Delimitros said.
The crash shut down southbound Genesee Avenue for a short time.
Witnesses told 10News that the car that went over the embankment was being chased by a second vehicle before the accident. That second car fled the scene.
The engine and the front wheels broke off of the vehicle that was being chased after the driver hit a stoplight pole. Police said the driver of the vehicle was found outside of the vehicle and was rushed to the hospital.
Police are still looking for the second car.
