SAN DIEGO -- Police say two 7-Eleven clerks and a customer took down a couple of shoplifters -- one of whom was armed with a gun.

The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. Thursday at a 7-Eleven in the 3300 block of Sandrock Road in Serra Mesa.

Police say a man and a woman were shoplifting in the store and two clerks followed them out into the parking lot and confronted them. A struggle ensued and a customer, Alfred Tudela, jumped in to help.

"Somebody said that he had a gun," Tudela said. "So I started reaching under there and I felt a metal object. And I took it away from him, but he was biting my fingers."

At some point during the melee the gun did go off. No one was hit.

Police arrived and took both the man and woman into custody.
