SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - El Centro area Border Patrol agents arrested a man Wednesday on suspicion of smuggling methamphetamine in a van engine.

Agents stopped a 2003 Ford Windstar north of the Highway 86 checkpoint near the Salton Sea at 12:40 a.m.

A Border Patrol canine alerted agents to the front of the vehicle, agents said.

A search turned up four packages of meth in the vehicle’s engine, according to the Border Patrol.

The drugs, almost 9 pounds in all, had a street value topping $22,000.

The driver was a U.S. citizen who was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
