SAN DIEGO (KGTV)--A man too distracted by his cell phone to hear an oncoming Amtrak train was hospitalized Saturday after being struck by it, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.
Witnesses told sheriff's officials that a pedestrian was looking down at his phone and apparently did not notice how close he was to the oncoming train or railroad tracks on West Hawthorne Street and California Street around 11:35 p.m.
The Amtrak train went into emergency braking but still struck the man at 30 mph causing serious injuries. Emergency crews transported him to UC San Diego Hospital for treatment.
