A magnitude-7.4 earthquake occurred Saturday evening on the coast of Ecuador, 173 kilometers WNW of the capital of Quito, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The event was recorded at a depth of 20 kilometers.
"At least 28 people were killed after a powerful earthquake strikes," Vice President Jorge Glas said.
No immediate threat of a tsunami for the western coast of the United States.
