SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego is known as “America’s Finest City,” but it is also considered one of the nation’s best cities to raise a family.

A Homes.com study compared the top 25 metropolitan areas in the U.S. and ranked them in a “Family-Friendly Cities Index” based on these factors:

-- crime rate
-- cost of living
-- availability of child care services
-- average commute times
-- school quality
-- park acreage per capita

Overall, San Diego ranked 13th among the cities in the top 25. The city received high marks for its parks, commute and low crime rate.

Dallas topped the Homes.com list of family-friendly cities, followed by Charlotte, Houston, Minneapolis and San Antonio.

When it comes to California, San Diego is the highest-ranked city in the state. Los Angeles (No. 17), San Francisco (No. 23) and Riverside (No. 24) also made the list.

Homes.com stated: “The largest U.S. cities may be known for their unique attributes, but it’s not immediately apparent which of them are best for raising a family. The decision of where to call ‘home’ is a critical decision for new parents and can have a significant influence on the lives of their children.”
