Police are searching for three men who dressed up as construction workers and tried to pull off a smash-and-grab robbery at a watch store in Walnut Creek.

According to Walnut Creek police, the incident happened April 20 at the OC Watch Company.

Police said three men who appeared to be construction workers entered the business, and one of them asked the owner to sign a form to have power to the business turned off. As the owner looked at the form, the fake worker sprayed him and a customer with pepper spray.

A fake construction worker swung a baseball bat onto a glass display case while a third fake worker waited outside.

When one of the fake workers tried to grab items from the display case, the owner grabs a handgun and aims, causing the would-be thieves to run out of the store without taking any merchandise.

The owner did not fire any shots.

The trio jumped into a black Dodge Challenger with black paper plates and drove off.

Police have not been able to track down the would-be thieves.

No serious injuries were reported.
