SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Carlos family says burglars recently broke into their home using something that belonged to them.

"It was scary because I wasn't here. That was the difficult part; I wasn't here," said Bill Ping, who was away in Los Angeles on business at the time of the break-in.

Ping's wife was alone when she walked into their home to find it ransacked.

"Everything was thrown all over the house," said Bill Ping.

Ping said whoever broke in used one of his cinder blocks from his garden wall to smash an expensive glass door.

"It's a violating feeling when someone comes in and goes through all your things," Ping said.

Ping told 10News he thinks the burglars had done this before because they went for specific things such as jewelry, a guitar and sports memorabilia.

The burglars appeared to have left bigger items behind.

For 20 years, the Pings lived in their neighborhood in peace. It only took seconds to have that ripped away.

"It's the classic 'you never think it's going to happen to you and then it does,'" said Ping.

The Pings are worried because the burglars took personal documents, including passports and titles to cars.

The family said they filed a police report.
