SAN DIEGO -- The death of a man outside a Normal Heights gas station Thursday night was being investigated by homicide detectives.

Several calls to 911 were made about 10 p.m. Thursday, with callers reporting a person down outside a gas station in the 3200 block of El Cajon Boulevard, said San Diego police homicide Lt. Ray Valentin.

An African American man in his late 40s was found unconscious and not breathing by responding officers, who tried to revive him before paramedics arrived. The victim, who was not immediately identified, had major trauma to his upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, Valentin said.

The female gas station clerk told police the victim came to the window to get her attention. She said she turned away for a moment, and when she looked back, he had fallen on the ground.

Anyone with information on the man's death was urged to call the San Diego police homicide unit at 619-531-2259 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
