NATIONAL CITY, Calif. - A driver suspected of leading a high-speed chase in National City early Wednesday morning was killed after crashing into parked vehicles.

Just after 2 a.m., a National City police officer spotted a gray Mitsubishi Lancer sedan speeding on Harbison Ave. When the officer tried to catch up to the Lancer, it sped away onto East 16th St.

A short time later, in the 1900 block of 16th St., the Mitsubishi crashed into a parked work truck and a Honda Civic -- both unoccupied, police said. The crash impact sent the Honda -- which was completely destroyed -- into a nearby fence.

The driver was trapped in the wreckage, prompting emergency crews to use the Jaws of Life to pull him from the mangled Mitsubishi. The male victime, who has not been identified, was declared dead at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.
