EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Grossmont College and the office of Senator Joel Anderson came together for the eighth year in a row to honor the victims of September 11th.

The day before the ceremony, volunteers put up 2,977 flags one for each life taken that September morning.

San Diego native and 9/11 survivor, Bill Hay, was the keynote speaker for the memorial. Hay was on the 55th floor of the north tower when the first plane hit.

Hay is 89-years-old and a Marine veteran with two purple hearts. He says he shares his story every year because he doesn't want younger generations to forget about what happened.

The ceremony included other speakers from Grossmont College, CAL-FIRE and students from Steele Canyon High School.
