OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Police are searching for a driver who struck a gas meter in Oceanside, forcing two homes to evacuate early Tuesday morning.

Just after 4 a.m., an Oceanside police officer attempted to pull over a car for a minor code violation in the area of Country Club Lane and Maxson Street. According to police, the car refused to stop and a short chase ensued. The officer lost track of the car before learning it had collided into a residential gas meter in the 2300 block of Maxson Street.

Police and Oceanside Fire Department crews arrived on scene to find the car abandoned. Two homes were evacuated while San Diego Gas & Electric shut off the gas. The residents were eventually allowed to return to their homes.

Police did not confirm if they know the identity of the driver who fled the car. The investigation is ongoing.
