A dog named Dwayne "the rock" Johnson has become a sort of mascot for the Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe.

10News covered Dwayne earlier this month after the animal center informed us of his extreme mistreatment. Dwayne backstory is filled with cruelty. The animal center says he was pulled from the streets of  Tijuana by an independent rescuer. He had been scrounging for food and, because of a deformed mouth, was often treated poorly by people.

Despite extreme mistreatment resulting in a deformed mouth and other painful injuries, Dwayne remains gentle and kind and incredibly loving.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Helen Woodward Animal Center President and CEO Mike Arms. “This beautiful dog took all the despicable abuse and neglect man can show to an animal and still he wouldn’t turn on mankind. Helping animals like this is at the heart of Helen Woodward Animal Center. This is what we stand for and we’ll do everything we can to care for him and protect him.”

This week Dwayne underwent surgery on his mouth. Take a look at the photo below to see the extreme difference in his appearance.
