Sixteen motorists were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving at three checkpoints in San Diego County this weekend, according to authorities.
Nine of the arrests were made at or near a checkpoint in Mission Bay Park, set up by San Diego police near the southern Vacation Isle bridge. It was up from 11 p.m. Friday until 3 a.m. Saturday, according to Officer Mark McCullough.
Of the 964 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint, 654 of them were screened by officers, which lead to 16 motorists being given a field sobriety test. Ten vehicles were impounded, McCullough said.
Sheriff's deputies in Imperial Beach made five arrests on suspicion of drunken driving at a checkpoint that was set up in the 900 block of Palm Avenue from 8 p.m. Friday until 3 a.m. Saturday, according to Sgt. Laura Spang.
Of the 1,371 vehicles that went through the checkpoint, 77 of them were sent to secondary inspection and 16 field sobriety tests were given. Six vehicles were impounded and 26 citations were issued for violations including unlicensed driving, driving on a suspended license and driving without a license in their possession.
National City police officers made two arrests on suspicion of drunken driving during their checkpoint, which was set up in the 300 block of Mile of Cars Way from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. Friday, according to Sgt. Jeffrey Meeks.
Of the 1,151 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint, 533 of them were screened by officers. Eleven drivers were cited for operating a vehicle unlicensed or while suspended or revoked and two cars were impounded, Meeks said.
The checkpoints were made possible by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant.
