SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Serra High School football coach Dru Smith knows his audience.
Tierrasanta is a community filled with military families, so it only made sense to bring a Marine to football practice to inspire his players.
Retired Sgt. Marcus Chischilly isn't just any Marine; he lost his left leg to an IED blast in Afghanistan in 2010.
Chischilly talked to Serra High players this week about the importance of perseverance in everything they do.
"There are going to be things that happen in your life that are going to hit you harder than some of the hits on the field," Chischilly told players. "You've got to be able to pick yourself up and keep moving forward."
Smith hopes that kind of attitude serves the Conquistadors well in their game against Escondido on Friday night.
"We've got a big test this week with Escondido. We're going to see exactly where we're at," Smith said.
