Betsy DeVos Wants To End Rules Meant To Curb Abuse By Some Colleges

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is moving to eliminate rules that would put more accountability on poor performing for-profit colleges.

The Obama-era Gainful Employment regulations sought to keep schools from burdening students with debt without providing an education that would give them better job prospects.

On Friday, the department proposed scrapping it and said instead it will work "to provide prospective students with important, actionable, and accurate information that could be used in college enrollment and borrowing decisions."

It's at least the second proposal by DeVos in the past two months to undo regulations aimed at protecting the funds of college students.

In July, she proposed getting rid of certain loan forgiveness policies for college students who claim their schools defrauded them.

The Gainful Employment regulations would end July 1, 2019, after a 30-day comment period.
