Violent crimes up, property crimes down in first half of 2018, SANDAG report says

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Violent crime in San Diego saw a spike compared to last year, according to a recent SANDAG report.

The agency's analysis found about 30 violent crimes and 153 property crimes were reported to San Diego County law enforcement agencies every day through the first half of 2018.

Compared to mid-2017, that's a two percent climb, the agency reported.

Within 2018's numbers compared to 2017:

  • Rapes were up 13 percent,
  • Aggravated assaults were up 3 percent in the first half of the year,
  • 40 homicides occurred in the first half of 2018, down 5 percent from 2017, and
  • Robberies were down 7 percent.

SANDAG also found that property crime rates were down three percent, burglaries were down 13 percent overall, and car thefts were down three percent compared to last year.

Larcenies overall increased by one percent. Across the types of larcenies, thefts from cars, buildings, of bikes, and pickpockets were up in the first half of this year.
