South Bay Police Chase Ends With Two Arrests

A car theft suspect led officers on a chase through the South Bay on Tuesday before eventually crashing into a telephone pole, police said.

The pursuit began near Greenwood Cemetery in the Mountain View district of southeastern San Diego shortly after noon, SDPD Sgt. Rod Vandiver said.

The motorist fled to the west, then south on state Route 15 and Interstate 5, a dispatcher said.

The California Highway Patrol joined in the chase as the stolen 1996 Honda Prelude went east on state route 54, then north into Paradise Hills.

Minutes later, the black sedan crashed into a utility pole at Rachael Avenue and Roanoke Street, and the two occupants jumped out. One immediately surrendered as officers ran up with their guns drawn.

The other suspect -- the driver -- ran off but was taken into custody a short distance away.

Medics took both to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, Vandiver said. Their names were not immediately available.
