SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Serra Mesa residents were shaken out bed early Wednesday morning after a suspected DUI motorist ripped through their neighborhood wrecking a row cars and leaving the street and yards strewn with debris.

Officers responded around 2:15 a.m. to calls of a Jeep that slammed into several vehicles parked along Murray Ridge Road.

"It sounded like multiple explosions, really close together," said resident Bruce Wegmann.

A witnesses told 10News the motorist tried to walk to his home "a block away" because he wanted a drink of water.  A resident gave him some water and was able to keep the motorist at the scene.

"It's just lucky it was this time of the day and that there's nobody out on the street doing anything," Wegmann said. "Frankly, I'm amazed that the guy in the Jeep walked away from this thing."

The driver was checked out by medics but not hospitalized.

Police said the driver admitted drinking earlier in the night.  He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
