SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Housing and homelessness were major topic's of Mayor Kevin Faulconer's State of the City address Thursday night.

The Mayor said the city needs to take more steps to solve the homeless crisis instead of condoning it. Faulconer also said the city would be opening more shelters that can care for up to 300 people.

During the address, Faulconer said he will work to get shopping carts and debris off the street. “There’s a place for you and it’s not on the streets,” he added.

Faulconer also addressed the issue in last year's speech, saying that tackling the homelessness problem needs to be the region's first social priority.

Skyrocketing housing costs were another major topic of the address. The Mayor spoke about changes he implemented over the last year to help decrease housing costs.

Faulconer said he is working to use taxpayer dollars more efficiently in an effort to fix roads. He continued saying the city now fixes roughly 25 miles of San Diego streets in a month.

When Faulconer was elected, he said the city only repaired 25 miles of roads per year.

Thursday was the third State of the City address for the Republican mayor, who was elected in 2014 and reelected last year.
