IRVINE, Calif. (KGTV) - A San Diego man died this week in a single-vehicle crash on the 405 freeway in Irvine.

The Orange County Medical Examiner said Carey Bruce, 36, was the driver of an SUV that struck a tree while on Interstate 405 just after 3 a.m. Friday.

Bruce was traveling southbound on I-405 just north of Irvine Center Drive off-ramp when California Highway Patrol said he abruptly turned his Chevy Tahoe toward the right edge of the roadway, according to the Orange County Register newspaper.

The SUV struck a tree and began to catch fire. A good samaritan used a fire extinguisher to douse the flames, CHP told the Register.

Bruce was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP has not determined why he suddenly veered off the road. They ask anyone with information to call their Santa Ana office at 714-567-6000.
