SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A high-speed chase that started in Vista came to an end Friday in the Del Mar Heights neighborhood of San Diego, officials said.

According to police, a San Diego Sheriff's deputy tried to pull over a suspected DUI driver in Vista near the intersection of Poinsettia Ave. and Linda Vista Dr. just before 9 p.m. Instead of stopping, the driver led officers on a chase down I-5. During the chase, officers found out that he had a gun in the car.

San Diego Police said during the pursuit, the driver called 911 and told the dispatcher he had a loaded handgun, a female passenger, and wanted to commit "suicide-by-cop."

The driver exited I-5 at Leucadia Blvd. and a female exited the vehicle. The driver then continued the pursuit on I-5.

The chase ended near the corner of Via Grimaldi and Carmel Valley Road, where SDPD say the driver veered onto the Torrey Preserve march and continued driving about 200 yards.

Police said the driver exited the vehicle and began advancing on deputies, ignoring commands to stop. At one point, the driver pulled his hand from behind his back quickly, prompting deputies to fire on him.

The driver was transported to the hospital and is in stable condition, police said. His name is known but has not been released. No officers were injured.

The deputies involved are a 5-year and 2-year veteran.
