NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- National City renters are set to press the city to put rent control on the November ballot.

Supporters of the measure say skyrocketing rent is out of control and they can’t afford it. In National City, renters make up about 70 percent of the population.

According to the US Census Bureau, the median gross rent in the city increased from &980 in 2015 to $1,143 in 2016.

According to a Union Tribune study, as of March, rent in San Diego averaged $1,887 per month, reaching a record high.

National City has the lowest median gross rent of any incorporated city within San Diego County. Dozens of community members are set to attend the meeting to urge city council to let constituents vote on the rent control measure.

More than 3,600 signatures have been collected for the item to be placed on the ballot. Renters say they have to get two jobs just to be able to afford rent.
