DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) -- Officials at Del Mar Racetrack opened a makeshift medical clinic on Tuesday to help treat grooms and horsemen who lost everything in the Lilac Fire.

Many of the grooms from San Luis Rey Downs also lived at the training center. They helped save several horses, but are now dealing with physical injuries and emotional trauma.

Chuy Rodriguez saw a doctor today for the first time on Tuesday morning. He was diagnosed with a sinus infection. Several others were treated for other respiratory conditions, others suffered burns and cuts.

Some evacuees tell 10News they're hesitant to go to the clinic because their immigration documents burned in the fire. Officials say everyone can go see a doctor, regardless of their immigration status.

The consultation is free, but any medication prescribed by the doctor is out of pocket. The clinic is scheduled to stay open indefinitely, as needed.
