Man Dies After Apparent Drug Overdose

A man who went into violent convulsions on a North Park roadside Thursday after apparently overdosing on drugs struggled with police and medics and died in an emergency room minutes later, authorities said.

The 28-year-old man's girlfriend made an emergency call from the 4400 block of Kansas Street about 9 a.m. to report that he had "taken too many drugs and was passing out," San Diego police Lt. Kevin Rooney said.

Patrol officers arrived in the neighborhood to find the man standing in the middle of the street, according to Rooney.

"As they got closer, (he) lay face-down on the sidewalk and banged his head against the concrete," the lieutenant said.

The officers handcuffed the man and restrained him by holding his head to prevent him from smacking it against the pavement any more, and held him down by his torso to keep him from kicking them or getting back onto his feet.

As the man arrived at a trauma center in an ambulance, he went into "medical distress," then died about six minutes later, Rooney said.

An autopsy will determine the man's cause of death, according to police. His name was withheld pending notification of his family.
