SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are trying to piece together what led a man and a half-naked woman to float across the San Diego Bay from Coronado to the Embarcadero aboard a kayak early Thursday morning.

The incident culminated in a bizarre rescue effort when officers responded to calls at around 2:30 a.m. of a woman stuck on a jetty near the Joe's Crab Shack on 525 E. Harbor Drive, at the Embarcadero Marina Park South.

Nearby workers called police after hearing noises coming from the pier below the restaurant.  The workers investigated the commotion and discovered the woman screaming from the rocks.

The kayaker told workers he didn't know the woman and that he was helping her off Coronado island because she feared that police were after her, according to a witness at the scene.  He told the witness the woman appeared intoxicated.

The kayaker then called 9-1-1 and walked away.

Officers arrived at the scene and found the woman stuck on the rocks wearing only a black shirt.  Firefighters were called to help free the woman's foot caught under a pile of rocks.

The man later returned to the scene where he was questioned by officers then released.

The woman was hospitalized with injuries.  Her condition is unknown at this time.

It's unclear when the couple started the nearly one mile row from Coronado to the Embarcadero or whether they were prepared to safely cross the bay.
