Firefighters mop up fire at Escondido recycling plant

Fire reported at Escondido Resource Recovery

ESCONDIDO, Calif. - Escondido Fire Department crews mopped up a messy fire at a recycling plant on Saturday.

The Saturday afternoon blaze was estimated to have caused $200,000 in damages to the Escondido Resource Recovery at 1044 West Washington Ave., south of State Route 78 and East of Interstate 15.

Escondido Fire Department crews arrived at the plant to find smoke throughout the facility and a deep-seated fire in the recycling material, authorities said.

Fire department and plant personnel worked together for almost seven hours to remove and extinguish about 80 tons of burning or smoldering recycled material, said Battalion Chief Ken Slaven.

One firefighter received a minor injury and was treated and released from Palomar Medical Center.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
