CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The City of Coronado is in the process of placing special barriers on certain streets to protect residents and visitors during special events, such as the city’s 4th of July celebration.

According to the Coronado Times, Mayor Richard Bailey explained that the barriers being installed, called bollards, are a security measure due to recent attacks at public gatherings around the world.

Once installed, the bollards will prevent vehicles from accessing Orange Avenue during events like the 4th of July Parade.

City officials say they set aside $140,000 for the hundreds of barriers. The Coronado Times also reports that the bollards will be used during other events around the city such as Halloween on Margarita Avenue.

All of the work is expected to be completed by mid-June.
