SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A bill in the state legislature could lead to more opportunities for San Diegans to take vacations at local beaches.

San Diego Assembly member Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher is the author of AB 250, which would help pave the way for new affordable accommodations along California's coastline.

"The beach belongs to everybody and I think we all agree to that," she told 10News in an interview. "The coast is all of ours and that includes being able to access it for a small, affordable vacation."

The bill would require the state to create more campgrounds, hostels, and cabins which would be available to the public and affordable rates.  One such proposal which could receive assistance through this bill is a plan from San Diego County to open a new campground along the Tijuana River just a mile from the ocean.

San Diego currently has only three coastal campgrounds: Silver Strand State Beach, South Carlsbad State Beach, and San Elijo State Beach.  The camping spots are booked months in advance.  In fact, several campers told 10News the spots are typically all reserved within just a few minutes after registration opens each January.

"They even have things called reservation parties where people sit together with laptops, and they've got all their sites set up and once that clock hits 8:00 AM, then they can press the button and get the spot," says camper Michele Rivers.

AB 250 passed the State Assembly and is now working through the State Senate.
