Big rig crashes on southbound SR-163 at SR-52 onramp

Crews clean up fuel leak

SAN DIEGO - The westbound onramp to state Route 52 from state Route 163 has been reopened after a big rig crash early Friday.

The crash in Kearny Mesa occurred shortly after 2 a.m. and shut down the westbound onramp.

Authorities said that the rain may have played a part in the accident. The driver of the gas tanker was on the transition ramp when he lost control and crashed, according to police.

The cab of the truck hovered in the air, but the driver managed to get out.

Firefighters and a hazardous material team were called to the scene to clean up the fuel leaking from the truck. They determined that about 100 gallons of fuel flowed from the truck.

An official said initial reports indicate that the fuel did not get into the drainage system, though it was a big concern when the accident first happened.

The driver was treated at the scene and transported to the hospital for minor injuries. A SigAlert was issued at 3:21 a.m.

Lanes were reopened at 6:35 a.m.
