ESCONDIDO (CNS) - An early morning fire today at an unoccupied, yet unlocked residence in Escondido has been deemed suspicious, according to a battalion chief.

Firefighters who extinguished the blaze in the detached apartment in the 1100 block of North Escondido Boulevard around 5:15 a.m. found that the doors had been unlocked and opened, but no one was seen on the area, according to Battalion Chief Chip Paulson of the Escondido Fire Department.

Investigators were later summoned in an effort to determine the fire's cause, Paulson said.

An apparently unrelated electrical fire sparked by a malfunctioning window fan broke out in a bathroom at a nearby apartment early Sunday morning, but it was quickly extinguished, authorities said.
