In 2010, there were just over 600,000 residents in San Diego County’s population of people over age 65 That number is now expected to nearly double to more than 1.2 million people by the year 2030. And increasingly, older adults say that they want to age in place--Eighty-seven percent wish to remain living independently in their homes and communities.
San Diego County’s Aging & Independence Services ’ goal is to support older adults to maintain good health, live safely, and thrive. Over the next three years, they will be implementing a plan that addresses key areas of health, housing, transportation, social interaction and dementia friendly communities.
Y Active Adults are YMCA members ages 50 plus, who maintain healthy spirits minds and bodies through a variety of programs available at your local Y. These activities are designed for active older adults looking to stay fit while creating lasting friendships and social events that will keep them active for years to come.
Multiple classes are offered every week throughout San Diego County, including classes like Hydro Healing, Aqua Fit, Chair Yoga, or Sit & Get Fit (appropriate for chronic health conditions such as fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s, or arthritis).
Remember you are never too old to learn to dance or swim. Y Active Adults can play Bridge or Mahjong, and keep their minds limber along with other activities such as Haiku Writing, Pickle Ball and morning socials.
There’s always something for everyone at the YMCA.
Each branch offers opportunities for active adults to learn new skills, meet others and have fun too. Find out more through your local YMCA at
